El partit Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya va ser fundat el 17 de novembre de 1974. En la seva fundació van participar un total de 125 persones, d'entre les quals la persona més influent era en Jordi Pujol. Els objectius que tenien proposats eren construir la col·lectivitat catalana, reformar la llengua, refermar les tradicions, donar suport en la defensa de la democràcia i la llibertat i l'autogovern i projecció europea de Catalunya.
L'any 1977, es va celebrar el IV Congrés de CDC, en el qual es va decidir que el partit es presentés a les eleccions generals formant coalició amb l'Esquerra Democràtica de Catalunya i el PSC-Reagrupament.
